Finally got out to see the 360-degree a/v installation “Song 1” at the Hirshhorn, on its second-to-last night. What an amazing piece. The creator, Doug Aitken, weaved a handful of vignettes with urban night collage-type visuals in a 10-minute looping video that’s set to an extended, haunting version of “I Only Have Eyes for You,” by the Flamingos.
Technically, the whole thing comes off seamlessly - the visuals are crisp, there’s zero overlapping, and the projections match the borders of the building perfectly. The audio is consistent too no matter where you walk.
This is the first time they’ve ever projected something 360 degrees around the whole building, and I hope it’s not the last - the space is perfect for it and judging by the crowds out, people really responded to it.
