Is Fiber Google’s biggest breakthrough product since Gmail?

Matt Rosoff thinks Google Fiber is the same type of innovative leap as Gmail was for three reasons:

  • It exposes how slow incumbents have been to innovate
  • It leverages Google’s hardware expertise (in data and storage) to get prices low
  • It paves the way for new business areas

Fiber does look amazing. But the fact that they still don’t have some core channels (ESPN, CNN) and it’s only available in one city put a damper on things. Also, how does it work with Google TV? A clear roll-out road map and some idea of how this fits in with the rest of Google would inspire a lot more confidence.
